Launched in 2021, the Berkeley Community Resource Hub initiative directly addresses the significant disparities in internet access and resource availability between Berkeley County’s urban and rural areas. These vital hubs are strategically located in Cainhoy, Alvin, Cross, Sandridge, and Wassamassaw, bringing essential services closer to residents.
Through a powerful collaboration between the Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, Google, Home Telecom, and numerous dedicated community partners, the first hub opened its doors in May 2024. The impact has been truly transformative. Residents in rural areas now enjoy free Wi-Fi, enabling crucial telehealth consultations, seamless online learning, more efficient job searches, and vital access to mental health resources. Each hub is equipped with computers, printers, and webcams, alongside valuable educational materials, empowering individuals to develop new skills and pursue job training, particularly in high-demand fields. Beyond technology, these hubs have blossomed into vibrant community gathering places, fostering connection, collaboration, and providing direct access to essential mental health support services.
