Technical College Offering Classes For Training Sled Security Instructors

Trident Technical College Division of Continuing Education and Economic Development is offering courses to train SLED Security Instructors. To attend this training, the student must be currently registered with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) as a security officer with a licensed security company. All classes meet on the Main Campus of Trident Technical College at 7000 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston.

SLED Level I Security Instructor Training: All participants must be currently registered with SLED as a security officer with a licensed security company to attend this training. Students will teach a 20-minute block of instruction on a security topic of their choice. Students must achieve a minimum score of 70 percent on both the written examination and oral presentation. Topics include speaking competencies criteria, SLED regulations, security instructor development, fingerprinting, shoplifting and security legals. Once training is completed, the student will be trained to SLED standards to instruct security officers for Security Officer Level I. The 40-hour course meets from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Feb. 3, March 3 and April 7. The course costs $459.

SLED Level II/III Security Instructor Training: All participants must be currently registered with SLED as a security officer with a licensed security company to attend this training. Students will each have a 20-minute block of instruction on a handgun topic of their choice. Students must achieve a minimum score of 70 percent on both the written examination and oral presentation. Topics to be covered include: use-of-force policy; weapon and range safety; leather gear and personal support equipment; drawing the weapon; weapon components-revolver; weapon components-semi-auto pistol; design, function, nomenclature of semi-auto pistols; legal responsibility; weapons cleaning and maintenance; ammunition; shotgun training and course of fire; and basic marksmanship techniques. The 40-hour course meets from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Feb. 24, March 24 and April 28. The course costs $459.
