The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments’ Board of Directors and the Regional Planning Committee are pleased to announce completion of OurRegion OurPlan. This multi-year initiative, involving countless hours of collaboration between the BCDCOG and various jurisdictions, agencies, organizations and citizens groups, culminates in a blueprint for the Lowcountry’s future.
OurRegion OurPlan articulates a Vision of how goals; shared by residents, businesses and industries for a healthy environment, vibrant economy, and high quality of life, can be achieved. It provides a framework for local and regional decision making that will balance our needs for infrastructure, economic growth and development with desires to preserve the environment and resources that are unique to this region and way of life.
OurRegion OurPlan is believed to be the first regional plan in the state of South Carolina that takes a comprehensive view of the region, looking beyond jurisdictional borders to consider growth and development issues and opportunities more holistically. Core recommendations focus on integrating land use choices with the demand for transportation infrastructure to promote a better quality of life for the region’s citizens. Larry Hargett, current Chair of the BCDCOG and Chairman of the Regional Planning Committee, is quick to acknowledge that “crafting this Vision Plan was a challenging, but rewarding task” and notes that “the journey has just begun to making this Vision a reality”.
The Council of Governments and its partners plan to release the final Plan document with a brief presentation of the Plan’s recommendations at 11 am on Monday, March 25th. The presentation will be held in the Council of Governments’ conference room at 1362 McMillan Avenue in North Charleston.
