Summerville, S.C. / October 29, 2013 – On Friday November 1, Summerville Medical Center (SMC) will hold a ribbon cutting for their new Pediatric Emergency Department. The 4,000-square-foot addition is set to officially open in November and will provide 24/7 emergency care for children up to 17 years old. SMC staff, Summerville Mayor Bill Collins and local elected officials will be on hand for this momentous occasion.
The state-of the-art pediatric department includes board certified pediatric emergency physicians, 24/7 pediatric nurses and a specially trained music therapist. All rooms are private and include child-friendly artwork, colors and special lighting to make it easier for young patients to pass the time.
The Pediatric Emergency Department addition includes a new dedicated emergency entrance and a separate pediatric waiting room, allowing children to be kept separate from adult patients from the time they arrive. “No parent should have to drive far for emergency pediatric care. The residents of Dorchester County, North Charleston and the surrounding communities deserve peace of mind when it comes to their children’s health, and we are happy to provide it,” says SMC CEO Lou Caputo.
SMC is also currently constructing a new inpatient pediatric unit on the second floor next to women’s services and the nursery. It will include a communal play area, where children can spend time with family members or child life specialists, and a procedure room for distressing situations such as shots and IV placement. That way, the child’s room remains a “safe haven” for healing. That addition is set to open in February of 2014.
