MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – (May 31, 2012) / www.berkeley.k12.sc.us / – Berkeley Elementary has earned recognition as a National School of Character (NSOC) from The Character Education Partnership (CEP). Nationwide, twenty public schools, three private schools, one charter school and one school district were selected for the prestigious award.

Each year, CEP selects schools and districts that demonstrate through a rigorous evaluation process that their focus on character development has had a positive impact on academic achievement, student behavior, and school climate. Selected schools are expected to serve as models for other schools, helping them to achieve the same results.

This is the first year that the school is being recognized as a National School of Character. It has been recognized as a ‘State School of Character’ by the South Carolina State Department of Education and the Character Education Partnership since 2009. In addition, the school received accolades as a ‘Profiles in Character’ and a ‘Promising Practices’ recipient in 2010. Winning schools will be honored at the 2012 National Schools of Character National Forum on Character Education in Washington, DC.

Media are encouraged to attend. To read a profile on each 2012 National Schools of Character, or for more information on how schools can improve through high-quality character education, visit www.character.org.

Report to the community- Berkeley County School District- Annual Report 2011-2012

Berkeley County Superintendent- Rodney Thompson

We ended last year on a high note, as we learned that our graduation rate rose to 75%, and our drop-out rate plummeted to 2%.  The summer was busy, as we held our Summer Academy of Instruction and Learning, and concluded with a full week of Summer Leadership.  We started the school year with the excitement of our first Stuff the Bus Berkeley campaign, and we’ve been busy in the classroom since then.  I’ve paid a visit to the faculty at every school, where I’ve reinforced our priority for the year- literacy. read more »
