(Berkeley County, SC) – The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with local government, education, healthcare and other local business and community leaders on a strategic community and economic development planning process to create a shared vision and strategic plan for Berkeley County, SC. The vision plan will be led by Steering Committee Co-Chairs: Senator Paul Campbell, Berkeley County Delegation Member; Dwayne Cartwright, Berkeley Electric Cooperative; Jesica Mackey, City of Goose Creek; and Caldwell Pinckney, Berkeley County Council.
“We believe Berkeley County is at an important crossroads,” said Elaine Morgan, CEO of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. “We have vibrant neighborhoods, a strong business community, wonderful recreational attractions, and a great quality of life. We know our region also has challenges, and we believe the time is right to address those challenges through a clear vision and plan for Berkeley County, SC.”
Invitations to participate on the vision plan steering committee have been mailed. The committee will guide and provide input to the overall planning process and serve as advisors and decision makers on a final plan. Market Street Services, Inc., a community and economic development consulting firm, will facilitate the steering committee’s work. This will be an all inclusive study, and as part of the process, we are soliciting input from the community over the course of the next several weeks to ensure our future economic development efforts remain well-informed and mindful of the needs and wants of Berkeley County residents, businesses and workers. In addition to a series of focus groups and interviews, we have launched a survey: surveymonkey.com/s/BerkeleyCountyStrategy, that is open to all current and former residents of the Berkeley County area.
“This initiative will give us an understanding of the region’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and competitive standing,” said Dwayne Cartwright, President and CEO of Berkeley Electric Cooperative. “The future vitality of our region is due in large part to our ability to develop and sustain a healthy economy, a ready workforce, educational opportunities, a strong human services sector, and vibrant cultural offerings. We are excited to begin and anticipate a vigorous effort from the community.”
